Welcome to Leeds

Where is the city centre? Where are the shop and entertainment facilites? The sidewalks are narrow, overcrowded and require multiple road crossings. There is a constant stream of fast moving cars, trucks and buses to contend with. The area is cluttered with improper street furniture and poor materiality. The ideas sought after for this project include removing the traffic that moves from Holbeck through City Square towards Kirkstall Rd or Woodhouse Lane into a sub-level tunnel. This would enable the entrance for Leeds train station to become a pedestrian friendly area; allowing for a high quality public realm that leads visitors into the key areas of the city.

What if to enter or leave the train station required walking through a winter garden? City Square would no longer be dominated by traffic. The residents of Leeds would finally have a public space to be proud of.
Leeds City Square
The site plan was designed to show the invigoration of the area defined by Leeds Train Station, the rail tracks, City Square and Leeds commercial stores. I aimed to create a collage that showed the linking of keys spaces throughout the area development defined by Leeds Train Station and City Square. Snapshots were taken at various stages to show the development of the site plan. The ‘matchsticks’ signify the various people that would use the space. Length and width propose potential ages and time periods within the space. Everyone has their own motives for moving through the space, however as a collective the people move together in the same direction.

What would happen if you removed the main vehicular route which divides City Square, Leeds?
